[Android Studio] Troubleshooting AGP 8.0 and later
Buzzvil periodically publishes guidance on store policy and development environment updates to help partners maintain sustainable app development and operations. Review the information below against your app's setup.
Topic: The impact of Android Gradle Plugin (AGP) 8.0
Starting with Android Gradle Plugin (AGP) 8.0, R8, Android's code shrinking and optimization tool, runs in full mode by default instead of ProGuard compatibility mode. We found that this change also affects Buzzvil SDKs (BuzzAd and BuzzScreen).
On July 19, 2023, Buzzvil released changes in BuzzAd 3.39.x and BuzzScreen 4.33.x to address app build issues with AGP 8.0 and later.
Recommended solution
Update to BuzzAd 3.39.3 and BuzzScreen 4.33.3 or later, which address the conflicts with AGP 8.0 and later.
The simplest way to avoid the effects of R8 full mode becoming the default is to avoid upgrading AGP to 8.0 or later. However, keeping your development environment up to date requires newer AGP versions. The most reliable solution is therefore to update to BuzzAd 3.39.3 and BuzzScreen 4.33.3 or later, which address the underlying conflicts.
If you do not update the SDK
Using BuzzAd earlier than 3.39.3 or BuzzScreen earlier than 4.33.3 with AGP 8.0 or later may cause the following issues.
- The app crashes when opening Feed or Pop Feed.
nativeAdfails to display.- Other issues may occur depending on your implementation.
If you do not update, run regression tests before publishing your APK to the store to check for AGP 8.0-related issues in Buzzvil services.
